Behandlung von Bandscheibenvorf\u00e4llen

Spinal discs are connected to the vertebrae in the spine, separating each of the vertebrae and acting as a cushion to absorb shock and protect the vertebrae and nerves. The discs have a soft interior filled with a gel-like fluid, which is covered with a harder exterior. A herniated disc, also known as a slipped disc, occurs when the disc's exterior becomes damaged which enables the soft interior to push its way out of the disc. This applies pressure on the nerves and spinal cord, which can cause pain in the back, neck, legs, arms, or buttocks.

Spinal discs tend to deteriorate with age which increases the chance of a herniated disc, and other factors such being overweight, having a physically demanding job, or a family history of herniated discs, may also increase the chances of a disc rupturing.

A herniated disc is diagnosed by a doctor on the basis of the patient’s symptoms and by performing a physical exam. In some cases, the doctor may take X-ray, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), or CT (computed tomography) images of the spine.

Many herniated discs can be treated with medication and physical therapy, however in rare cases whereby non-invasive treatments do not work, surgery may be performed.

Vor der Behandlung von Bandscheibenvorfällen im Ausland

The doctor may refer the patient to a specialist who will perform a physical exam and discuss the symptoms with the patient. The doctor may need to examine images of the spine in order to devise a treatment plan, therefore an X-ray, MRI, or CT scan may be necessary.

In most cases, a herniated disc can be treated with medication and physical therapy, however if there is no improvement after 6 weeks or the symptoms are severe, surgery may be necessary. If undergoing surgery, the patient will usually be advised to refrain from eating and drinking in the hours before the surgery, in order to prepare for the general anesthetic.

Patients with complex conditions may benefit from seeking a second opinion before beginning a treatment plan. A second opinion means that another doctor, usually an expert with a lot of experience, will review the patient’s medical history, symptoms, scans, test results, and other important information, in order to provide a diagnosis and treatment plan. When asked, 45% of US residents who received a second opinion said that they had a different diagnosis, prognosis, or treatment plan. Click here to learn more about how to get a second opinion.

Wie die Behandlung durchgeführt wird

Medication is the main method of treatment for a herniated spinal disc. Some over-the-counter pain medication can be used to help manage pain, or the doctor may prescribe medication such as muscle relaxer, narcotics, or cortisone injections. Medication is taken orally by the patient and cortisone injections are usually injected into the nerves in the spine. After 4 to 6 weeks, the doctor will usually reassess the patient to ensure that the treatment is relieving the symptoms.

Medication is usually used as a method of treatment in combination with physical therapy and exercise, which can help to relieve muscle and joint pain and stiffness. The physical therapist will demonstrate a series of movements to the patient, in order to relieve symptoms.

In the case whereby medication and physical therapy does not relieve symptoms, surgery may be performed to remove a part of, or the entire, damaged disc.

A discectomy is one of the types of surgeries that can be performed. The surgery will begin once the patient has been anesthetized, with the surgeon making an incision in the spine. Once the surgeon has gained access to the disc, either part or all of the disc is removed, depending on the damage. The vertebrae may then be fused together using a bone graft, depending on how much of the disc is removed. Once finished, the incision site is then closed with sutures.

In some cases the surgeon may perform a discectomy and then replace the removed disc with an artificial disc. The surgeon will begin my making an incision in the spine, removing the damaged disc, replacing it with an artificial one and once in place, the incision is closed with sutures.
