Bariatric Surgery in Poland
Bariatric surgery refers to a range of procedures which aim to counter severe obesity and other associated medical conditions. Suitable candidates for bariatric surgery usually have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 40, or a BMI of 35-40 alongside medical conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure (hypertension). Bariatric surgery is usually only provided for those who have made attempts at natural weight loss, and is considered to be a last resort rather than a quick and easy solution to obesity.
There are a number of different bariatric surgery procedures available, each one catering to different circumstances and levels of obesity. Gastric band surgery effectively halves the size of the stomach, reducing the amount of food you need to consume to feel satisfied. A silicone band is placed around the upper stomach and one section is tied off from the esophagus. This can lead to weight loss of between 30-50% of the patient’s original weight. Once the desired weight loss have been achieved, the band can be removed.A sleeve gastrectomy works in a similar way to a gastric band, but once the stomach has been reduced in size it cannot be reversed. A section of the stomach is surgically removed, reducing its capacity and eventually resulting in significant weight loss.
Gastric bypass is another bariatric surgery procedure which works by shrinking the stomach and limiting the amount of food and calories someone needs to feel full. During a gastric bypass the upper and lower portions of the stomach are divided into two separate pouches, before the small intestine is connected to both. This has the effect of telling the brain that the stomach is full to capacity after a small amount of food is consumed, resulting in dramatic weight loss after about 6 months.
Bariatric surgery is a complex surgery with a significant recovery period and a number of side-effects. Patients are usually required to stay for up to a week in hospital and must follow a strict dietary plan in the weeks and months after surgery. It also takes a long time to become accustomed to consuming solid food again, and for the first month the patient will be forced to a liquid diet.
