Dentistry in Spain
Most patients think of dental care as just taking care of the teeth, but actually dentistry is a much broader field that includes everything inside the mouth and jaw. Good dental health is important for a the patient's overall health. A dental consultation can detect the early warning signs of many diseases before they become serious, including some forms of cancer, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Regular dental checkups can also, of course, find dental problems before they get worse.
Dentistry is a broad branch of medicine which covers the overall health of the teeth, gums and mouth. Strands of dentistry include orthodontics (the straightening of misaligned teeth), periodontology (issues affecting the surrounding tissue) and pediatric dentistry (the treatment of dental issues in children). Common dentistry procedures include dental implants, root canal, bone graft, crowns, and veneers. Additionally, dentistry also covers more cosmetic procedures such as teeth cleaning, teeth whitening, and tooth jewelry.
Dentistry also deals with issues affecting the structure of the jaw and facial area, a speciality known as maxillofacial and oral pathology. This includes procedures such as bone graft, impacted tooth removal, cosmetic surgery around the neck area, sleep apnea, and corrective jaw surgery.
Some of the most common dentistry procedures are those which involve teeth which have been damaged by tooth decay. When bacteria is left to grow it begins to break down the enamel and tissue around the tooth. If left untreated, the resulting decay and cavities can lead to pain and difficulty eating. Tooth fillings are usually the first treatment aimed at preventing the further spread of decay. For severe cases of decay, a more extensive treatment may be need. If the bacteria has infected the roots, a root canal is usually required to remove any infection before further treatment can take place. The affected tooth may then be replaced by a dental implant or crown, which could then be followed by a veneer (a thin layer of porcelain applied to the surface of the tooth). In cases where a number of teeth or even a full set of teeth have been damaged by tooth decay, all-on-4 or all-on-6 dental implants are a good option. All-on-4 implants replace an entire row of teeth using and implant bridge which is screwed into the jaw, making it a long-lasting alternative to traditional dentures.
