A body lift is a cosmetic procedure for patients with excess skin and fat which cause their skin to sag and hang loosely. Incisions and deep support sutures are used to remove excess skin and tighten it while liposuction is used to remove excess fat deposits. Incisions are made in a bikini-like shape around the torso and skin adhesives, tape, stitches, or staples are used to close the skin. A body lift may include work on the abdomen, buttocks, hips, and other areas around the torso and sometimes is combined with other procedures. The procedure is performed under anaesthesia and the length of recovery will depend on how many incisions were necessary. Small drainage tubes may need to be placed and removed at a later date. Some results may be apparent right away, but over the next year or two they will become even more visible as the incisions heal and the skin conforms to the contour of the body. It is important to note that if just fat is being removed, a body lift is not necessary and a more simple liposuction procedure can be performed.
