About Hemorrhoidectomy

Hemorrhoidectomy

A hemorrhoidectomy is a surgical procedure used to treat hemorrhoids which are painful and do not respond to other non-surgical treatments.

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins which are located in the anal canal, either internally or externally. Hemorrhoids can cause pain and rectal bleeding. A hemorrhoidectomy is usually performed on large hemorrhoids that cause pain and discomfort after passing stool and after other non-surgical treatments have failed.

The procedure involves making an incision and tying off the hemorrhoid, or it may also be performed using staples, depending on the patient.

Before Hemorrhoidectomy abroad

Ahead of the surgery, patient will meet with the doctor to discuss the surgery. The doctor will want to ensure that patients have tried non-invasive treatment options first, such as topical creams.

The procedure is usually performed under general anesthetic, meaning patients will normally need to refrain from eating in the hours leading up to the surgery.

How is it performed

The surgeon will make an incision in the tissue that surrounds the hemorrhoid and tie off the swollen vein to prevent bleeding, so that the hemorrhoid can be removed. The incision may then be sutured or left open, depending on the patient. The incision may be left open in the case where closing it leaves the patient at high risk of getting an infection.

Stapling is another method of surgery, whereby the hemorrhoids are repositioned and stapled, reducing the blood supply and causing them to shrink over time.

Anesthesia

General anesthetic.

Procedure duration

The Hemorrhoidectomy takes 30 to 90 minutes.

Hemorrhoidectomy
Hemorrhoids can be internal (inside the anus) or external (outside the anus).

What to expect after Hemorrhoidectomy

Post procedure care

After the procedure, patients will feel sore and it can be painful to pass stools. It is common to experience some bleeding at first.

It is recommended to eat a bland diet, and the doctor may recommend taking stool softeners to avoid straining when passing stool, which can cause hemorrhoids to return. The doctor may also recommend antibiotics, pain killers or ice packs.

Possible discomfort

Patients may experience pain and discomfort in the days after the surgery.
