Before Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) abroad

A cystoscopy will be needed in order to check the prostate size and test the urinary system. Specific medications will be prescribed before and after the procedure, and the patient will be advised to avoid medications which can cause excessive bleeding.

How is it performed

When the patient is under anesthesia, the surgeon will insert a resectoscope through the penis tip and inside the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder) in order to reach the prostate. With this tool, the surgeon will cut away the excess prostate tissue that is blocking the flow of urine. After the surgery the surgeon will insert a catheter to help the patient to urinate during the days following the operation as the urethra will be sore and swollen.

Anesthesia

Spinal anesthetic or general anesthesia
